Thanksgiving with the Etheringtons

When I told my Mom we might possibly be moving to Austin this last summer, she immediately told me that she couldn't wait to visit! They came for Thanksgiving and it was so much fun. I love my family. Sadie of course leached onto Grandpa and didn't let go until pried off at the airport when they went back to Utah. It was 6 degrees in Utah when they left and were welcomed with warm upper 60's weather. While we whipped up all of Mom's delicious Thanksgiving recipes, Sadie and Grandpa climbed the tree in our back yard. Only Grandpa would think to do something that fun. I used to climb trees (back when I was 7) but after Chase encountered a possum while jumping the fence, I've steered clear of their domain. I've become quite the wimp. Sadie got a little closer to heaven that afternoon.
Mimi always brings lots of books when she comes to visit. Sadie's favorite thing to do with her Mimi is snuggle up and read some new stories. "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie" was a big hit. This is my first Thanksgiving cooking with Mom and Jane since I got married. For the past three years we always ate at the Todd's with the Cannon clan (we miss that:-). This year, we had so much fun singing to Ella Fitzgerald and enjoying the breeze from the open windows.

The feast was delicious and the Pumpkin Cheesecake, even better. Once our stomachs had settled, we packed up the car and raced to the movie theatre to see Tangled. Sadie now wants to grow her hair out down to her toes. I loved the movie mainly because it was adorable, but because little Jack sat on my lap practically the whole time! It was my turn to be in heaven. Such a little snuggler. I also had Sadie sitting right behind me which is always fun because I can look back and see the magical delight exuding from her little face. She is now a Rapunzel super fan, like every other little girl in that theatre.

That night the temperature dropped like 20 degrees. The next day, although it was sunny, we bundled up in our scarves and hats to go shopping on South Congress street. What fun little shops! They had a candy shop with chocolate covered bacon. Only in the South! They had a whole store dedicated to cowboy boots. Of course we had to buy some pink ones for Sadie. She'll be so surprised Christmas morning. I don't know if I've mentioned that Sadie is obsessed with ponies and cowgirls. She's going to rock those cowboy boots.

After a delicious meal, we went to the Hey Cupcake trailer to get some more deliciousness. Jack threw rocks, we enjoyed the sunshine, and Sadie licked her frosting. Does anyone have a kid that actually eats the cupcake and not just the frosting? I don't think that kid exists.

We headed over to UT campus and Jane thought it would be fun to seek out the Chi Omega house. Dad, who loves to be a pill sometimes insisted on finding the Beta Theta Pie house as well. They must be having a bad couple of years because not only have they been closed up in Utah, but don't even exist in Austin. Poor Dad. I know he doesn't really even care but it's fun to make fun of him anyway. The Chi O house was way nicer than ours at the U. We peeked in the windows and decided that headquarters must like them more than the Utah sisters. Oh well. I bet they didn't have as much fun as we did living in the "four man" down stairs or playing super mario brothers until 4 a.m. You have to be creative when you live in a dump:-)
After a quick stop to a Book People (independent bookstore..a must for the Etheringtons) and Anthropology, a must for Mom, we headed home, put the kids to sleep and went to Harry Potter. Jane stayed home and watched 5 recorded episodes of Americas Next Top Model. I TIVOed them just for her.

Trailer Parks

I never thought I would EVER eat from an outdoor vendor. I flinch when I walk by hot dog stands or have to smell the goopy cheese they put on people's chips. D.C. was full of them and I was never tempted to patronize their little carts but Austin has made a new woman out of me! Austin is known for their large number of outdoor food facilities. There are trailers EVERYWHERE selling cupcakes, crepes, tacos and they're REALLY good. Maybe I've been missing out all these years!

After touring a little downtown Jack fell asleep in the car so we pulled up to one of these trailer parks and had a delicious meal. Chase got a fried avocado taco, Sadie, a "crepsedilla" and I got a fantastic crepe filled with swiss cheese, chicken and a a spicy sauce that made my eyes water:-) I learned from a man at one of the "Hey Cupcake" trailers that Austin has nearly 3,000 trailers selling delicious food through out the city and surrounding areas. Such a fun idea! Jack got a great little nap while we ate in the sun. I love it here!

Pack Rat

Normally I would prefer to associate any other word to my first born than "rat" but when it comes to lugging 5-6 items around with her all day, everyday, a rat is the only word I can come up with. Sadie is the world's best Pack Rat. If there was a contest to see who could carry around the most objects without being annoyed, it would be Sades. I struggle every day with her over the number of items she wants to bring in the car, to a play date, to church or even a stroll to the park. When she rides her bike anywhere, Clifford is always in the front basket, while her three ponies adorn the backpack on the inside of her handlebars. She usually has three necklaces on, a ring, and some fashionable clip for the day which usually ends up being a horrific Halloween one she got at preschool.

I don't like carrying anything around with me. I'm chastised for never having my phone, my wallet stays in the car as I put the one credit card in my back pocket. I don't wear any jewelry other than my wedding ring and watch. I always feel like a gypsy when I have too much dangling around me (I'm weird, I know). I try to keep my house as anti-clutter as possible while Sadie hangs every single things she colors on the walls and refrigerator. When I throw her stuff away I have to put it at the bottom of the garbage can or in the bins outside because she has been known to sift through the trash in order to find her "favorite Halloween toy" or the best colored "my little pony" page ever!

I might be getting too into this but this all reminds me of my fourth companion on my mission who also happened to be the biggest challenge I had faced yet. Forget the people slamming doors in my face. Hermana Hewson was a trial that would surpass all the rejection, door slamming, and being kicked out of apartment buildings. Her red hair matched her tempter and besides the fact that she wore an engagement ring and had a wedding dress hanging in her closet, she was a pack rat to the tenth degree! As her senior companion I tried convincing her that she didn't need to carry around three grocery bags full of stationary, trinkets, and who knows what around her wrists. She also wore bands around her wrists because they were "frail" which probably stemmed from her carrying around three plastic bags around all day. She collected plastic key chains (there were probably about 15-20 of them) and she attached them to the outside of her scripture case which bounced off her hip when she walked. I swear those plastic key chains clinking about gave us away whereas if they were gone, unsuspecting civilians would have actually had to talk to us but were warned before hand of our initial approach. The darn key chains must have given them time to retreat to their homes before we could find them! Darn those Spaniards! In addition to her scripture bag, key chains and plastic bags, Hermana Hewson also had another bag strapped around her chest that carried her camera, wallet and other pictures of her beloved Pablo who she never ended up marrying anyway.

Maybe it's a scar from the mission or my Dad's hatred towards clutter that has made me who I am but watching Sadie carry around so much stuff bothers me because at the end of the day I'm usually the one who has to carry them all or look for them when she's left them at someone's house, the car or the the grocery store. I still think it's pretty cute that she's so attached to her little toys but the difference is she is 4 and Hermana Hewson was 21. Hopefully she'll grow out of it:-)

Farmer's Market

They have a farmer's market every Saturday in town all over the place. We picked one in Barton Creek for the day and weren't surprised to find a long line of people waiting to sing some live music. Austin is known for their live music at any possible venue. Check out the guys cell phone on the left. It looks like the one I had my freshman year at the U. Love it!
Sadie got her face painted and of course asked him to paint a unicorn because that is the most glorified pony of all time. It flies! Did you know that? Her unicorns and ponies all have the same names; Acornia, Princess, and Destiny. She was very sad when we told he she could NOT wear the unicorn on her face to church the next day.
We sat down and listened to the music while Sadie performed for everyone (as always). That girl LOVES to dance, especially for an audience. Even if she's a little shy at first, she usually has everyone watching and clapping towards the end. Jack spent his time climbing on any and every chair that was unoccupied and nearly gave everyone around us a heart attack when he almost fell over. Sometimes I think that kid has a death wish. He climes up on everything these days. I'll turn around while I'm making his oatmeal in the morning to find he's shimmied out of his highchair and standing straight up for a better view of the room and the floor far below him. I have to keep two eyes on him at all times.
Have I mentioned yet how much I love Austin? There is always something fun to do and the weather is always so cooperative. It was November and Sadie is wearing a tank top! It was either pretty hot that day or Sadie must have done a lot of dancing!

Chiddlers

Oh, how I love them!

I Got Bangs!!

I have a love/hate relationship with bangs. I love how they add a little flare to a pretty boring mom haircut, but I hate that they only look good RIGHT after they're blown dry. Priscilla (my new hairdresser, great name, I know) gave me bangs with out my consent. I love and hate her for doing this because I think bangs are fun but I hate her when I am outside, in the wind, and they are sticking straight up in the air. I also hate her when I don't have time to shower (most days) and I end up walking around with greasy bangs all day long. Those usually end up being "hat days" because the static clinging bangs are another reason to throw my arms up in frustration towards heaven. I am the kind of woman who can't tell a hairdresser what she REALLY thinks. I tell her I love it after she chops off the front half of my hair when I'm actually having a panic attack inside. Why do we have to be so polite? Aren't we paying them to make us look like movie starts (I was going to Katie Holmes..far fetched, I know). So when you see me walking around with a hat on it's because I hate my hair and my life at the moment, and if you see me with bangs it's because I've embraced them for the day, or for the 30 minutes that they don't drive me crazy!

Breakfast by candlelight

Ever since Sadie discovered LED tea lights from the Halloween pumpkins she's found the most creative ways to set the mood. I find her putting them around her meals throughout the day and around the coffee table for a little rendezvous with the Backyardigans (her new favorite show BTW).

Growing up!

My sweet Jack is getting big! I know it's cliche to say so but I wish I could just freeze time! We went down to Zilker Park in downtown Austin and enjoyed some live music, the awesome play scape, the train, and the river which needed some rocks. Sadie always had a pretty good arm at throwing rocks in the water and Jack has definitely followed suit. Those two could sit at a water's edge for hours if we let them. Jack has also learned that slides are pretty cool. Now that he has finally learned to sit down at the top instead of plundering down head first, slides are his favorite new adventure.

Pen Pals

Sadie has two little pen pals. She has so much fun riding her bike to the park and dropping her letters in the mailbox. Everyday she wants to check the mail in high hopes that Lizzy or Lilly have written her back. It's pretty cute. Who needs email, texts, or Facebook when you can get a colorful letter written by little Sadie?

When there's a will, there's a way

Jack!

Halloween

Our nice neighbors invited us over for a little cul-de-sac mingle and then we headed home for the trick o treaters. Jack and Sadie went up and down our sreet and we got to know our other neighbors a little better.

When we got home we examined the damage and had a candy feast! Jack got his first taste of candy and was so excited he started dancing all over the place. It was hilarious to see him so high on sugar. They both crashed 20 minutes later. Happy Halloween!!

Pumpkins

Not the best activity for the kiddos seeing they can't hold knives but it's fun anyway. We ended up carving Halloween day.
Sadie was totally grossed out.

Bubbles

WEEEEEEE!!

On the way home from the lake, we stopped at the Halloween party at the club house. Jack was asleep in the car so Sadie must have gone down that slide 20 times. We even got her to go down by herself which made her feel like a superstar. After the magic show and small attempt to enter the haunted house we were pooped out and went to bed EARLY knowing we were going to be sore the next day....a good sore:-)

We LOVE Texas!!

When the Winegars told us they bought a boat, we were giddy with joy!! Boating was our courtship! We went waterskiing at least three times a week when we got home from our internships in Washington D.C. When I see Chase out on the water I remember why I fell so hard for him 10 years ago. This guy can waterski!!
Texas might have snakes, spiders, and fire ants, but they also have lakes and 87 degree weather in November!! The greatest part is that Texans are total wimps with the cold and I guess 87 degrees merits hibernation so we had the lake all to ourselves. If it hadn't been for a little wind, we would have had some serious glass!
Katherine said that the day before they were the only boat on the lake with glass surrounding them. It's like a secret Lake Powell that hasn't been discovered yet! Can you tell how excited we were to be waterskiing after a very long dry spell?
Sadie had a blast hanging out with Savannah and Jack just chilled. The kids did remarkably well for being on the boat 4 hours. As long as the boat was moving they just sat and enjoyed the breeze.

Thanks again Winegars for the great day and fantastic company. I think we're going to like it here:-)
