One of the first things we lamented about when the house flooded right before Thanksgiving was that Pops and CC might not be able to come visit anymore. The house was just such a disaster we didn't think we could pull it off! But after a few weeks of cleaning and drying everything off, we were back in business again. There was no carpet upstairs so we took the extra installation scraps from the garage a few weeks before and laid them down over the exposed nails and base boards. We also laid down every rug we had upstairs as well.
After the floors were all dried downstairs, we vacuumed up all the installation and drywall that had fallen from the ceilings and made it look pretty good. Other than the gaping ceiling holes, the house was totally livable. We still weren't sure if we would have to move out before Christmas, but we were definitely not going away for Thanksgiving. Many neighbors and friends offered to have us over for the feast, but Pops and CC said they didn't care about the house and wanted to come anyway. It was so nice having them here. And I love that they were cool staying in such a disaster zone. They're the best!!
Made a pumpkin and chocolate pie this year. Yummers!
And we made a scrumdiliuptious feast!! CC made her delicious orange rolls, Pops cooked the turkey and I took care of the sides.
The kids loved drinking "bubbly" from the fancy glasses.
Pops reading to the kids on their makeshift floors.
I still can't believe what a disaster our house is!!
It was just so nice to have Pops and CC here. They made our destroyed house feel like a home again. CC got to come decorate our Austin Christmas tree with us. Of course throughout the whole day it only rained the ten 10 minutes we were out there. Water seems to be ruining all our fun these days. We didn't get to take a picture of our finished tree. The sun came out when we were pulling back into our driveway. Boo!!
For fear of more rain. we stayed indoors and did some more Christmas preparation. The kids decorated the gingerbread house all by themselves this year. I helped with the frosting part. Normally the micro manager in me wants to tell them where to put everything, but I didn't even care this year. Hopefully the silver lining of this flood will be that I don't care about stupid stuff anyone. The appearance of the gingerbread house was one of those stupid things I could let go of.
With no real carpet to play on upstairs, the kids brought all the toys downstairs. They (Jack) built a pretty impressive track!
Chase and I took full advantage of the built-in babysitters and went on a hot date downtown! It was so hot, I fell asleep in the car on the way home. We are both completely wiped out!!
Pops and CC left the next day even with signs of threatening snow in their highway path. It was sad to see them leave for many reasons, but mainly because I knew we were going to have to face the reality of our house. Having them here made me put all of that on hold for a while. Time to gird up my loins (the female kind) and figure out what the heck we are going to do!
